Health And Safety Policy
Paddington Carpet Cleaning Health and Safety Policy
Paddington Carpet Cleaning is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our carpet, upholstery and hard floor cleaning services. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks in all areas where we operate and deliver cleaning services.
Our management recognises its duty of care under relevant health and safety law and good industry practice. We strive to prevent accidents, injuries, work-related ill health and damage to property, while continuously improving our standards.
Health and Safety Objectives
We aim to identify, manage and reduce risks associated with carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning and related services so far as is reasonably practicable. Our key health and safety objectives are to:
Provide and maintain safe systems of work for all cleaning operations, including on-site work at homes, offices and commercial premises.
Ensure that our equipment, tools and cleaning solutions are suitable, properly maintained and used safely.
Minimise exposure to chemical, biological, electrical, slip, trip and manual handling risks for both staff and clients.
Provide staff with appropriate training, information, supervision and personal protective equipment for their roles.
Promote a positive health and safety culture where all employees understand their responsibilities and act to protect themselves and others.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Paddington Carpet Cleaning has overall responsibility for implementing and reviewing this Health and Safety policy. This includes:
Ensuring that risk assessments are carried out for all main activities, including carpet and upholstery cleaning, stain treatment and equipment transport.
Putting in place control measures to manage identified risks, and reviewing them regularly or when circumstances change.
Providing appropriate training, instructions and supervision so all employees understand safe working practices.
Ensuring all machinery and electrical equipment used in cleaning is maintained in a safe condition and inspected at suitable intervals.
Allocating appropriate resources to support health and safety improvements and compliance.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Paddington Carpet Cleaning has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees are expected to:
Follow all safety procedures, instructions and guidance provided during cleaning operations.
Use protective equipment and clothing correctly, such as gloves, masks, knee pads, eye protection or footwear when required.
Report any hazards, near misses, incidents, equipment defects or unsafe conditions to management promptly.
Work in a considerate manner in client premises, keeping work areas tidy and minimising trip or slip hazards from hoses, cables and wet surfaces.
Cooperate with management to enable all legal and policy obligations to be met.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting work at a property, our team considers the layout, access routes, surface conditions and any specific client concerns. Where appropriate, a documented risk assessment is carried out to identify risks such as slips, trips, manual handling, electrical hazards, chemical exposure and restricted access.
Safe systems of work are used for handling machinery, moving furniture, applying cleaning solutions, operating hoses and wands, and managing waste water. Staff are instructed to avoid unsafe lifting, to ask for assistance when moving heavy items and to use equipment designed to reduce strain and injury.
Chemical Safety and Cleaning Solutions
Cleaning products are selected to be effective while being handled safely in domestic and commercial environments. Safety data sheets are obtained for all professional cleaning solutions and are made available to staff.
Employees receive guidance on correct dilution, application, ventilation and storage of chemicals. Protective gloves and eye protection are used when mixing or applying solutions that may irritate skin or eyes.
Chemicals are never left unattended in areas accessible to children, pets or vulnerable persons. Any residues or spills are cleaned up immediately to reduce environmental and slip risks.
Equipment, Vehicles and Electrical Safety
Paddington Carpet Cleaning ensures that all equipment such as extraction machines, vacuums, agitation machines and accessories are regularly inspected, cleaned and serviced to maintain safe operation.
Electrical leads and plugs are checked for damage before use. Staff are instructed to avoid overloading sockets, trailing leads across walkways without control and using equipment with visible faults.
Where vehicles are used to transport cleaning machines and solutions to client locations, they are loaded safely and maintained in roadworthy condition. Items are secured to prevent movement during transit and manual handling risks are considered when loading and unloading equipment.
Client and Public Safety
Our team takes care to protect clients, their families, employees and visitors when we are working on their premises. Where possible, warning signs are placed near wet areas, hoses or other temporary hazards created during the cleaning process.
We encourage clients to keep children and pets away from work areas and equipment while cleaning is in progress and until carpets or floors have sufficiently dried.
Where furniture is moved, it is handled with care, and protective materials may be used to prevent damage. Walkways are kept as clear as practicable to allow safe passage.
Training, Information and Supervision
All staff receive appropriate induction training, including safe operation of machinery, correct use of cleaning solutions, manual handling techniques, emergency procedures and client care. Refresher training is arranged whenever new equipment, products or methods are introduced.
Supervision is provided to ensure that safe practices are followed, especially for newer employees or those learning specialised tasks. Instructions and guidance are updated in line with current best practice in the cleaning industry.
Accident, Incident and Near Miss Reporting
Paddington Carpet Cleaning encourages open reporting of all accidents, incidents and near misses, however minor they may appear. This enables us to investigate causes, learn from events and prevent recurrence.
Records of incidents are kept, and findings may lead to changes in equipment, methods, training or risk controls. Where appropriate, clients will be informed of any incident that affects them or their property and steps taken to resolve it.
Health, Welfare and Wellbeing
We recognise that health and safety covers both physical and mental wellbeing. Paddington Carpet Cleaning aims to organise work in a way that avoids excessive fatigue, undue stress and unsafe time pressures.
Employees are encouraged to raise any concerns about their health that may affect their work, including musculoskeletal issues or sensitivity to certain chemicals, so that reasonable adjustments can be considered.
Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety policy is reviewed regularly and revised where necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry standards, work activities and feedback from staff and clients.
Paddington Carpet Cleaning is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance and will continue to develop safer methods, higher standards and better training to protect everyone affected by our services.
